Tamil - The Fauna

 Besides a great variety of insect life, there are hundreds of species of animals and birds in Tamil Nadu. On the Plains, the Indian Antelope or black buck is found in most districts. The hunting leopard and Indian wolf are also found in the low country. Hyenas occur in the plains of most district and on the lower hills. The nilgai and four horned antelope are seen here and there. Tigers leapards, black bear, spotted deer and wild dog haunt both the plains and the hills but the thick cover. In the heavier jungles of the hills are found the little mouse deer, the banking deer, the sloth bear, the sambar and the wild dogs. Bison and gaur and elephants are common on the Western Ghats, Including anaimala

The Major wildlife sanctuaries of the State are Mudumalai and Anaimalai (Indira Gandhi W.S). Some species are peculiar to this state such as the bison and the white Sambar. On the Nilgiris and in the western ghats from Anaimalais to as far as Kanniyakumari, the Nilgiris Ibex, which occurs nowhere else, is met with.

Birds form an important Variety of wild life of Tamil Nadu. Many Varieties of perching, high flying, nocturnal and diurnal birds, pretty birds, singing birds, helpful birds and birds of prey are to be found here. The Mixed heronry at Vendantangal Birds Sanctuary is on of the most spectacular in India. During the inhospitable winter in the cold countries of northern Asia and Europe, Many birds migrate to warmer and southern countries. A good number of them come to South India. There is a multitude of reptiles and amphibians. The Python, the cobra and the crocodiles, frogs and lizards are a few examples. Marine and fresh water fauna form an important part of the wealth of Tamil Nadu. Pearls and Conchs of the state are well known. Oyster beds extend for about 64 kms along the coast and conch beds are localised off the coast of Titicorin and Rameshwaram
